First go to Start->Programs->Startups and right click->delete anything you don't want to start up (usually there should be nothing in there unless you want it to be--it is almost never necessary for anything to be in there--if you realize later you should have left something there, just go to the recycle bin and right click->restore that item).

Then, (as long as you don't have Windows 2000 or 95 in which case go here for MSCONFIG app:

http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html

)

Winkey+R or Start->Run (same thing), then type

msconfig

then press Enter or click OK.

Go to Startup tab. Expand the Command section, and/or research each Startup Item by searching the web to see what it does, which program it starts, etc. Most (90%+) can usually (and should) be disabled. Unchecking disables startup.

A much easier way to do this is download JV16 power tools (free trial), install it, and go to startups, and manage everything there--except still check the other methods above when using JV16.

then go here (it will tell you great ways to speed up your computer by disabling useless Services):

http://theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

But remember, other things that could make your computer crawl could be a memory-hogging anti-virus or related application (infamous ones are Norton, Symantec, Mcafee, etc.) instead get NOD32, the best antivirus period www.eset.com try a free trial, and configure for maximum protection (search online to find out how--at the NOD32 forum)

1. Go to Start > Run
2. Type MSCONFIG in the "Open:" box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.
3. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).
4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items."

you can normally tell when programs start, because they will appear in the task bar. but if its slow. then just press ctrl, alt, delete. al together and it will come up with windows task manager, from there, if you then click on applications, it shows what programs are running. you can see all the processes running to, if you click on processes..

i dont really know much about computors, but that is what i know..

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
You can find it here:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

While in msconfig, look at the services tab, here you will see a list of all Microsoft services and all non Microsoft services running.
