i am so sorry yo uare going through this.
it can often be detected at 16 wks, though not always.
often with an anencephaly baby the pregnancy will be normal and you will have good movements. hun, your baby is very much alive right now, love it and embrace it.
use this time to plan your birth. there are some tough decisions to make.
if you want to hold and see your baby, dont let them talk yhou out of it. its all up to you.
its a hard adjustment and it will take time to adjust to this new norm.
best of luck

Here are a few links. If you do a search like, "detecting anencephaly with ultrasound" you'll get some information. The third site shows a chart which claims anencephaly can be seen fairly early (but you don't know for sure how reliable some things like this are).

I can imagine how you must feel that the whole world has gone. I hope you have listed all questions you have and sit down and ask the doctor every last question you have. If it would make you feel better to be more certain get another opinion or another sonagram.

Prayers with you.

One of my close friends lost a baby to anecephaly a few years back. The triscreen test that is at around three months had come back positive for spina bifida. She came to terms with that and was making plans to provide care for her child. She refused to terminate. Then during the anatomy scan at twenty weeks the ultrasound tech was having trouble measuring then baby's head and it was determined that the baby had anecephaly. She was going to carry the baby to term but then the baby stopped moving as much as before and the doctor decided to induce. The nurses put a hat on the baby and wrapped her in a blanket so that they could take pictures of her and there was a funeral and everything.
