I've really lost my passion for my job as a receptionist, I had thought I just disliked my last place of employment but having changed offices I have realised that it is not the office that is the problem but the role. I am looking for a new job and went for an interview last night which was very positive, but what can I do in the meantime to help me through my days at reception and make it more bearable?

I've been a receptionist for 8 years and have been in my current job for a year so I feel I have given it my best shot here, I agree I do not want to slack off here, but I have tried asking countless times for more work, with no success. I have to stay because of my rent so there is no question of me just quitting.

Do your best at your current duties so you'll get a good job reference. Keep asking your boss for more to do even if he keeps not giving you any. That way, when someone asks him for his opinion on you, he can honestly say;"She always asks for more work to do".

In the meantime, enroll in a correspondence class and spend the free time you have while on duties (seems like you have quite a bit of it) studying and doing your class homework assignments. You'll gain more knowledge and credentials for your job advancement there (or elsewhere) and keep yourself from being bore in the meantime.

Your boss won't be able to complain about your doing that. Remember, you've been asking him for more to do and he hasn't given you any!

Just concentrate that although boring you are being paid for what you do, without your job and salary you will have an even more boring life as you won't afford anything, hang in their you have already taken the first step and had an interview, think positively that it won't be long before you move on.

Could you use your time to reserch your new job or maybe start writting a novel, if they can not give you enough work then search the internet for holidays etc.

Other wise just keep coming to yahoo answers to pass the time like everybody else on here.

Now you've made the decision to change, keep focusing on what you want to do next and don't just apply for one job at a time any interviews are good practice for the one you really want.

Dont start slacking on this job, because you will need a reference! Also have you discussed it with your boss? He may be able to give you more responsibilities and possibly a pay rise do that now, and see.
