why can't South Africans emigrate to UK as freely as Indians, Pakistanis and Nigerians?
There is a British High Commission in Pretoria so presumably South Africa is now regarded as a commonwealth country.

The Republic of South Africa is a full member of the Commonwealth and I would have thought UK entry requirements for South African citizens would be no better or worse than other Commonwealth states. When a permanent resident in the UK, South Africans would certainly have the same rights as citizens of other Commonwealth states, such as the right to vote or stand as a candidate in all UK elections.

South Africa always was a Commonwealth country, but was suspended for a while because of the apartheid regime.

Maybe the South African government has special rules concerning Indian, Pakistani and Nigerian immigrants.

The British Commonwealth are made up of states that were former colonies (except 1) and all accept the queen as head of state, which is why the queen forced a decision on who will be Prime minister in oz a few years back.
