This computer used to be very good but afterwards I had a power problem which I had repaired so since then my computer became very slow and I was wondering if they changed something from it but then I noticed that I also was infected with a virus which I cleaned but still it is slow. I've been told to go Disc Deframator I've done that all but still it's slow.

Thanx!

Hello,

Disk fragmentation can be only one of the reasons a PC will be slow. Virus infections is another. The anti virus software that you used, most surely modified some files on your computer when cleaning up. That could cause a slowing down. Try remembering what executables were infected and reinstall the software for that.

I suppose you are a MS Windows user. Each time you install a new piece of software, something in the Windows registry is changed, stuff is added to your startup programs, or .dll files get replaced by the files of the software maker. I suggest you clean your windows registry using tools freely available online, just do a Yahoo or Google search for that, or as a last resort try reinstalling your windows operating system if you have access to the original disks and serial numbers. I do that about every 3 - 4 months. Be sure to backup your important data on a secondary partition if you decide to do that.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

What kind of power problem? Possibly a replaced power supply with lower wattage in a demanding computer with multiple drive might act a bit screwey, but iam not sure.

Usually computers start to act slow or sluggish (not because somethings is really wrong) but because there is alot of programs runnign in the background that you dont see. Sometimes this is noticable by your quicklaunch bar being packed with icons (next to your clock).

I would reccomend disablign unneeded programs when your computer starts up by doing this.

Click START
Select RUN
Type "msconfig" without the quotes
Hit the ENTER key
At the top of this window click the STARTUP tab
Uncheck anything you dont reel is neccessary to run at startup ex.
-Quicktime
-Office
-AIM
Some of these items are abreviated, you wont hurt anything if you want to uncheck AL of them. You can always go back in and re-checkmark things.

After this REBOOT
At you desktop you will get a message. Just put a checkmark to "Dont display again" and click OK

Your hard drive is probably too full. Or you have unnecessary programs running. Go to start, click on run. Type in msconfig, and hit enter. Click on the startup tab in the box that pops up and uncheck everything (unless there are certain programs you want to start up with the computer), then reboot.

I agree that a power failure can cause a registry problem. Do you get any error messages?
Also the virus may have re-installed itself, plus you could have spyware.
You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

Run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool, then the Cleaner.

The virus leaves problems, just like it can on a real person. it's gone but it's done damage. [just short term on a comp]

You can try reformatting or stopping things starting at start up. Second one is best.
