Most of the smell is from poor circulation of stale air, as a lot of old people dont open the windows much. Open the whole house up and vacuum through. I was once told to put some perfume on the filter on the vacuum and it perfumes the air as you clean. Clean as many surfaces as possible with a good cleaner. Put some vanilla in a saucepan with some water and simmer gently on the stove. If you feel up to it, give the curtains a wash. It is probably beyond her to do it. And GOOD ON YOU! for being a lovely neighbour.

Bless you. I recommend Lysol Disinfectant, CRISP LINEN. This stuff is absolute magic. Not a cover-up, but it actually removes the offensive particles from the air. Kills 99.9% of germs on contact. Is mold and mildew resistant. You don't need much. Just a quick spray or two in each room, and wave it around. Febreeze doesn't even come close to comparing to Lysol Disinfectant for effectiveness. Bless you again.

Try placing a bowl of white vinegar in an out of the way place in the room where the odor is strongest. Within 24 hours the odor will be almost undetectable. Within 48 hours it will be gone completely. It does not mask the odor but gets rid of it.

That old people smell you speak of is probably moth bolls somewhere in the house. Locate them and rid the house of them. There cloths probably all smell like moth balls too. The dishes...throw them out and buy some cheap ones at wal-mart or some place else.

Air out the house as often as possible, use bleach when and where you can, also febreeze. Soak the dishes in dish water with bleach in it, this will sanitize them too. It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Once you get the house "in order", and she gets better, you may have yourself a weekly cleaning job (for pay this time), if you want it. Good luck.

Using bicarb of soda, rub it in and leave for a few minutes. spray with vinegar. This works on most surfaces and might help with the smell. It kills germs and is cheap and environmental.Air the joint out after. Better vinegar than eww....
