Chances are, your computer is infected with viruses. Here's my solution:

Unfortunately, this is a much harder task than it seems. First of all, presuming you are on Windows, create yourself a 'Limited User' account. Run all of your stuff on here. Only log in as administrator when you need to. Secondly, install the free programs already stated above, Ad-Aware and AVG. Third, (if you can) buy Norton Anti-Virus, Clamwin Anti-Virus, McAfee Anti-Virus, or any other antivirus software you can get a hold of. Fourth: enable Windows Firewall. Only unblock programs that you are sure will not infect you computer. And finally, install Mozilla Firefox, and use that in place of Internet Explorer. If you follow all these steps, you should do fairly well.

If this didn't work, perhaps you are running too many [processes for your computer. Either upgrade your computer, with some extra RAM, or if your computer is particurlarly old, maybe get a complete replacement. If you don't wantr to do this, try running less programs at once.

When was the last time you did any house keeping?

Empty Temp Internet files and cookies. Take unused icons off desk top. Ensure that at least 1/3 c drive is clear. Run defrag.

That may speed things up a bit. If not, ask again and will try to increase performance.

Luck

Probably just need to defragment your system and clean your disc. I'd try that before thinking it's virus. It may be but try this first 'cause it's free.
It'll run better after that. However, you could run higher RAM and increase your speed, or get DSL, if you're on a dial up system.

Have you downloaded any large programs recently, like for example Google Earth? I had the same trouble, so I un-installed it. Or run Spybot if you have it, get rid of any bugs.

First check for spyware and adware, run Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal and your anti virus in safe mode.
You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

Next, uninstall any software you no longer need, and delete any old files. Back up what you can on to an external hard drive or cd.
Then run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool and the Cleaner.
Finally, defragment the hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter.
