I am also in favour of that, but I am afraid that many countries in the west have either adopted a 24 hr economy, or are in the process of doing so. And that is something that is hard to turn back, I am afraid. It is all about the money, money, money.
But I agree: We should at least have one day on which we dont have to worry about shopping, or about going to work.

There was a time when stores were closed on Sundays, you could not get medicine for the kids or diapers. It was not as simple as it sounds. Life has changed.
I work at a place that is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year monitoring oversea support. I go to work on Sunday night and it counts as my monday. So when do I shop? When ever I can actually. I dislike shopping on weekends anyway it is too crowded. However I have co-workers who have different shifts and they need to shop on weekends.

I have always been against seven day shopping! People were in favour of it but it was always obvious to me that the government didn't enforce the law on Sunday trading because it means additional taxation revenue for them and also everybody overlooked the fact that it wouldn't take long before it would become illegal to park outside your own house even on a Sunday, the one day that you could legally wash your own car at home without being fined for illegal parking! More revenue for the government.
I don't know how Sunday trading helps the environment since if it is always illegal to stop outside your own house then surely all the cars must keep circling the block polluting the air?
Bring back half day closing on Wednesday too and shops closing at 5.30pm particularly the big supermarkets which force me to travel miles out of town to get a few items of shopping. I am single disabled guy and have a heck of a job getting food because of the giant supermarket chains. The supermarkets are not designed for single, disabled, pedestrians!

If you hate it that much, get a career change. If not, just get on with it. Just think of all the emergency service personnell who have to work all kinds of shifts - they may HAVE to shop on a Sunday sometimes, in order to eat. I'm sure you'd rather have them attend you should you need them, rather than have them pass out through hunger at the vital moment, eh?
And a special mention about the bible to egits like John B: At no point does the bible mention that Sunday is a day of rest. It says we should keep the Sabbath holy. At the time of writing, this meant sundown on Friday evening to sundown on Saturday evening. The Christians changed it to Sundays on changing the callender from lunar (13)months to solar (12months). Then, like everything else they usurped over the years, they go round trying to make out it was their God that made everything so. I know that and I'm an atheist.

You will be happy to know that is still mandatory in some counties in different states.
Many states like Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas still have blue laws in effect that allow counties to decide what to sell and when.
In KS and TX, many counties are dry and you cant buy liguor.
In El Paso county, TX, you cant shop on sunday, only necessities can be sold like food and medicine so many places choose to stay closed.

I agree! The Lord Himself required man to rest on the 7th day and yet man has decided to negate that which the Lord has decreed. Business are greedy and cant let go for just one day a week. Jesus Himself said that the Sabbath was mad for man and not man for the Sabbath.
