As a generalization, the LA area has much bigger traffic problems than the SF area. However, there are spots in the Bay Area that have ranked as worse on the last traffic surveys I saw published. Big picture though, definitely LA... and even when comparing the worst spots in the Bay Area, while they can be worse at times, they probably are better than the consistent traffic issues to the South.

If you look at the specific cities themself though, LA would be better since, even though congested, there are freeways running through the actual city. SF lacks anything in the way of a freeway actually running through the city, so you have to rely on surface streets with less ability to flow the traffic.

LA has the worst traffic congestion in the nation and SF has the 2nd worst traffic congestion in the nation. If you google "Texas Transportation Institute" they publish a report every year on traffic congestion nationwide and rank metro areas. LA has better freeways and more carpool lanes than SF, but SF has better public transportation than LA. People in Southern CA, espspecially San Diego, drive a lot faster than people in the Bay Area, which can be good or bad depending on the person; personally I love how fast people drive in SD and get frustrated when I come back home to the Bay and drive around; 85mph in the fast lane is how it should be.

I say LA, because at least in the Bay a lot of the people who would be driving are on BART instead. And I think there are more crazy drivers down south, personally ;) But both commutes are pretty brutal! I commuted from Oakland to SF for a couple of years and it took me almost an hour to go four miles. But at least I had that great view on the Bay Bridge!

LA definitely. The Bay Area is bad too, but at least it's a little bit more predictable and you can find pockets of time when traffic is light and manageable. LA traffic is just bad all around the clock.

i do no longer possibly think of one is greater effectual than the different. They the two have their specialists and cons approximately them and all in all i think of they finally end up approximately equivalent. site visitors would be worse than SF however the climate would be lots warmer in l. a.. Air high quality may well be shitty counting on the place you reside in l. a., yet air high quality in many factors of the Bay section isn't precisely stellar the two in the process the summer season and in case you reside close to the coast in l. a. that is not any longer a concern in any respect. Crime is undesirable in the two cities although that is restricted to particular factors of city. West l. a., the Valley are surprisingly risk-free and not undesirable in any respect. in case you have get bored of SF then l. a. might nicely be an excellent exchange b/c that could be a lot larger than SF and has greater variety universal. l. a. is not greater high priced than SF, that could be a sprint greater reasonably-priced inspite of the certainty that rents on the Westide close to Santa Monica, Westwood, and Beverly Hills are suitable to the comparable. l. a. is likewise very suburban. exterior of the city of SF, l. a. and the Bay section are no longer that distinctive in terms of suburban sprawl. The SF Valley resembles anybody of the valleys interior the East Bay or San Jose. i think of San Jose is basically yet another Orange County north. while you're bored of the Bay section you're able to flow for that reason and take a glance at residing in l. a. and in case you do no longer like it you may continuously flow decrease back or flow someplace new.

It depends on where you are and what time of day you are there. As with any major or even minor city, you can get into any traffic you don't like at certain times of the day.
Houston, DC, NYC, Atlanta, I-405, I-95, etc. have major problems too. It is a national dilemma. Too many cars, too much money, too much ????......

LA has worse traffic, but the drivers in SF have worse temper behind the wheel. Maybe LA people just accept bad traffic and live with it.
