Unfortunately, this is a much harder task than it seems. First of all, presuming you are on Windows, create yourself a 'Limited User' account. Run all of your stuff on here. Only log in as administrator when you need to. Secondly, install the free programs already stated above, Ad-Aware and AVG. Third, (if you can) buy Norton Anti-Virus, Clamwin Anti-Virus, McAfee Anti-Virus, or any other antivirus software you can get a hold of. Fourth: enable Windows Firewall. Only unblock programs that you are sure will not infect you computer. And finally, install Mozilla Firefox, and use that in place of Internet Explorer. If you follow all these steps, you should do fairly well.

What You Can Do To Protect Yourself

Install Anti-Virus Software and Update it Daily! Always leave it Functioning and Enabled!

Make sure your Anti-Virus Software is set to monitor your E-Mail Program that you send and receive E-Mail with!

Do not temporarily disable your Anti-Virus Software as it is too easy to forget to re-enable it!

Always keep your computer updated with the latest Security Patches! Microsoft releases them frequently as infected E-Mail Attachments may attempt to exploit program vulnerabilities.

Do not open attachments unless you are absolutely certain of the sender and the contents!

Try using free software. They work great. Search for Ad-Aware, for spyware, and AVG Free, for viruses. They both work great.
