I've downloaded a number of tracks from the itunes website and wondered, apart from buying an expensive ipod, what is the best way to protect my songs.

Can I put them on an ordinary mp3 player?
Can I save them to disk?
Am I able to copy & paste to a laptop?

There is a number of things you can do. If you only have a small number of songs say under 50 you can store them onto cd so then you can play them in the car.

Or alternatively you can use a remote storage website. eg BT Vault. Its a website where you can download all your music photos and documents and the are securely backed up. So if your computer breaks down or is stolen you can download them from the vault at any time.
