It depends the age of the neighbours. If they are elderly ones, give respect to them and call them for a dinner at your place. If it is one of your age he being a male a bottle of wine wrapped beautifully. If your neighbour happens to be a lovely lady a bunch of flowers with a pack of caramels or chocolate would be fine

If they have a garden - I would suggest a plant or bird feeder, if they live in a flat - perhaps a pot plant. Bake a cake or give them a bottle of wine. The last is my personal favourite because they will ask you to share it with them and this will result in getting to know them better.

Card and any small gesture as in the suggestions posted. Just handed it in, welcome him (her) and say something like "You know where I am if you ever need any help or an occassional cuppa but don't worry I'm not one to bother you all the time" That should be a nice welcome without the person thinking they have a Nosey Parker as a neighbour.

I grew up in the Midwest and it was the custom there, as well as in Montreal, and Calgary and Florida to greet your neighbor with some kind of baked goods. Cookies, brownies, banana bread... If you don't bake, something from the local bakery is OK.

How about a little basket of freshly baked muffins or cookies or something? As long as you are a good cook it shows a little bit of effort and shouldn't cost much either!!

Buy yourself a book on the English language and having read it, you may be understood by your neighbour.

Ask if they would like to go out for a drink/meal on you. In order for you to get to know them better. They can only say no.

Good luck!

i think a nice packet of biscuits and a welcome to the neighbourhood card, you can share the biscuits over a cup of coffee, see how you get on, then maybe go round with a bottle of wine at the weekend.
