It is a method of trying to stop insects from eating crops that are marketable or that people like.Modern day methods are done from the air.Planes loaded down with insectisides, fly very near to the ground and spray crops.In early days most insectisides were of a powder form .Powder dropped from above becomes a dust.Ergo cropdusting
