Today I finally got to buy a zen vision m. I was pretty happy with my purchase, until I took it home and discovered it didn't work. So I took it back to best buy and replaced it... another dud.
Anyway, I made a mistake with the first one by plugging it in to my usb before the software was installed, so maybe thats why that one screwed up. With the second one I just plugged it in because the software from the previous one was still on my comp. Was that a mistake? Should I have installed the software (the exact same stuff) that came with that one, or does it make a difference?
I really like this player from what I've heard about it, so I'm hoping maybe it was me. I think the odds of getting 2 defective players are pretty low.
With both of the players the power button will light up, but it won't turn on and neither windows or the creative software recognize it when its plugged in.
So anyway I'm going to trade that one in tomorrow, any tips anyone have so this one won't be screwed up. I could test it at B.B. but if it requires the exact software it came with that'll be no help. Thanks for reading, I'm about at my wits end. I want THIS player.

All the cds are the same, so don't worry about that. You might think about where you're buying it from, as some retail outfits (even the really big ones) repackage items that were previously returned without notifying the customer in any way. You might also want to test the player in a different port, just in case that one was somehow unplugged internally, or is fried for one reason or another.

Hey there. :)

Well, I do believe that you should uninstall everything from all of the other disks and start clean. Ok...lemme see...first of all you're like me and don't like reading instructions. XD

Well lemme tell ya, it's important that you read stuff with things like this.

So again, what you need to do is:

1. Uninstall everything from your pervious ones, and start fresh. Then, if you get another Zen, plug it in to the USB port. Make sure, like the other person who stated this, that your USB ports are working fine. You can also take the PC or laptop to Best Buy, depending on what you have and have them check the USB ports for you. I believe also depending if you have warranty on it.

Back to the Zen, you should definitely plug it in.

2. Basically the same step, but you should definitely wait until it is FULLY charged before using. This takes up to about 2 hours or so to fully charge. How to know when it's charged? Well, in the battery icon, you will see a little symbol that looks like a cord in the battery indicator at the upper right corner of the screen. The reason why is because you might mess it up if you don't fully charge it. (More importantly, did the player come with a AC adapter or no? If it did, then it's better to connect it to the AC adapter and charge it by hooking the AC adapter up to an outlit in the wall)

3. Once it is fully charged, you should then proceed to unplugging it from the USB port, and turning it on by sliding the power switch to the left and holding it there until the blue LCD ontop of the player lights up. If you have to, change the player's language, then turn it off by doing the same and sliding the power switch again and hold it there until the 'Shutting Down' message appears.

4. Then, step four is to begin installing the software with the player DISCONNECTED. Once the software is installed, restart your computer when indicated, then-

5. Register your Zen with an internet connection, and when prompted plug in your Zen.

6. Proceed to adding music either using the creative software, or just using Windows Media Player 11 (works best with the Zen).

Ok, so if you've got all of that done, it should work.

If you need anymore help, please feel free to email me. My email should be on my yahoo answers profile. :)

Hey, now that I think about it, did the Zen you got come with that AC adapter? Please let me know.

I hope this helps. ^__^

You should uninstal the old software, and install the nu one, cause the software has some different tools like video conversion and stuff.
