Yes people still care about others. Some people will listen to anyones problems and help anyone in need. I, personally, like helping other people. Also, I think Yahoo! answers should be example kind of that people still care about others. If people didn't care they wouldn't be answering you anymore.

I believe that fundamentally we are a sociable species that thrives best as a group. Unfortunately, the cult of 'I' has become so prevalent in the Western media over the last few years, that people have forgotten about others and instead concentrate on 'what's best for me'.

Any healthy society has to have a balance of I and We, if it goes too far one way or the other, you get dischord. In the West, in previous generations, there was too much emphasis on the we; now we have too much emphasis on the I. This can be seen in the number of people living on their own, as a pose to the great family homes of the past.

It's not that people don't care about others, they've just forgotten to practice it of late. If we're to survive global warming and forge the future we deserve as a species, then we've got to learn to care again and show it. If we don't, mother nature will replace us with a species that is capable of caring for the planet properly.

With the title 'top of the evolutionary ladder' comes great responsibility.

I think you are overgeneralizing. Yeah, there are a lot of selfish people out there. But there are a lot of people who are very unselfish. Millions of people work in our country as nurses, victim advocates, social workers, fire fighters, police officers, and teachers, amongst other things. Most of these people are not going to get rich doing it, either. In addition to this, think about all the mothers in this world that love their children unconditionally. There may be fewer of them, but millions of fathers love their families as well. What about friendship? What about charity? What about the thousands of people every day that give their lives for those they love? I won't argue that there is not any bad out there, because obviously there is. But you can't just look at the bad. You have to look at the good, too. It's there. Obviously from your question, a good place to find it is inside yourself!

Ohh deep deep Q.............. yes in this day and age we are very selfish............ it has alot to do with the new age....in the old days it was different.............. nowaday, everyone has to WIN, and not give a rats about others, not many can take a loss and if they get a loss they cannot cope with it....let me give you an example...The old party game for kids?.pass the parcel?..well nowadays everyone gets a prize when they unwrap a layer of paper in pass the parcel, and i mean every child.......in the old days only one child got the prize the one who opened the last layer of pass the parcel.so one child won.........all the others lost....... why must we ORGANISE a win for all our children..........ill tell you how to teach your children to care..........TEACH THEM HOW TO LOSE

"we must strive to be better."........wassa matter you need sumone to organise a pass the parcel for you and organise a
win???

a winner is someone who can take a loss the same way they take a win

we start winning and thinking of others when we learn how to take a loss

I would say that most humans strive to improve themselves only with little or no concern for others other than the one they love.

People who cared about others are still around, though very few. The ones that you mentioned above being selfish, you see them everywhere. But I believe even the most selfish person have someone that they cared about.

Y-E-S !

However, I find interest in how people "make it ok" to care or not care...

See, everyone knows that people need care, because we are all people, its the human condition that makes humans both creatures of habitat and creatures of habit.

Meaning, we all need other people. We all want to fit in and be a part of something, its in our human nature...

So, again, how do people "make it ok" to care?

Well,

I work with 110 foster youth, teach psychology at a local college, and provide counseling and therapy to individuals, couples, and families.

So how do I make it ok to work for small salary with high risk abused children for little to no respect?

Because if I can tell one child, "Its not your fault that you are in foster care", or "Its not your fault that your father abused you", then I can make a difference. I can care and make a difference.

While all of these things are under my "professional" label, they fit a personal need. Its maintaining the laws, ethics, and client boundaries that makes it "professional".

I do however, continue with my "helping personality" outside of work, and have always enjoyed people and the human condition.
I think as long as there are people, there will be people who care about / for / and with one another.

Bottom line - all people care, and some people "make it ok" not to.

The real question is : How do people make it ok? to care, or to not care??

I make it ok to care because I want to make a positive difference in people lives. I feel good when I help, empower, and acknowledge people. And of course, I feel good when people help, empower, and acknowledge me ;-)
