Not a computer, not the wheel and not fire.

The biggest, most important invention ever in the entire history of mankind is ... language.

That is because language offers us the chance to learn from other people's experiences without having to experience them ourselves. That saves us a lot of time (and danger!), so we can actually build on the experiences of others, instead of repeating them in a neverending cycle.

That's the main difference between man and animal: that we can learn something without having to see or do it.

I can tell 30 people in half an hour what a wheel is, why it is useful and how to make one; and they can go off and use wheels without having to re-invent it themselves.

2nd biggest after language: Writing.

there are obviously a lot of possible answers to this question, often depending on your view of what is important and what invention impacted this priority the most. the microprocessor is one invention that is becoming ubiquitous in almost all electronic devices. some would argue that air conditioning was instrumental in the development of technology and society. if there were any other arguements for a tech item that uses a microprocessor then wouldn't the microprocessor be more important because without it the tech item would be extremely limited and probably unable to perform the functions that make it so great. however, both of these can be trumped by the harnessing of electricity, because without that there would be no need for microprocessors or any way to control the temperature, so where does this argument stop. if every invention is somewhat in debt to some earlier advancement that helped make it possible then i would have to agree with the answer of language, because communication is a fundamental necessity for the coordinated progress for a society.
