I have heard that during the '71 war US sent its 7th Fleet to Bay of Bengal as warning to India to stop the war. Since US was and still is Pakistan's ally, it wanted to protect Pakistan. But Indians were not the ones to be intimidated by this. The US 7th Fleet was forced to return home. I want to know the full story. Please provide details.

A lot happened during that period which is still not known. One thing which is for sure is that the U.S backed out of its commitment to help Pakistan against the very imminent threat the country faced from across the border. The then Soviet Union was India's ally and had the the U.S intervened it would've risked the Russians getting involved on behalf of India and Pakistan was too small a fry to risk that kind of a face off for.
Cheers

At the height of the Indo pak tension, over the question of Bangla
Desh, US sent out a threat to India that they will be directly involved in war, in the event of India militarily confronting Pak over the question Bangla desh. Indira Gandhi said that in view of mass exodus from Bangla Desh (East Pakistan at that time), it is in the interest that the question is solved and that Pakistan stopped using its military to terrorise them into submission. Since the refugees have started crossing over the borders, in huge scale, they had to necessarily interfere. President Nixon was adamant. He ordered the dispatch of the 7th Fleet in the Indian Ocean, with a view to arms twisting and terrorising India. Hence, India showed a great sense of urgency in complete the Bangla Desh war so as not to allow it to escalate into a war of international ramification. The war also ended with the surrender of the Pak army to India within two weeks and the US also not going beyond the threat.
