Yes, It is called the Gumball Rally. There are 2 different runs. One run is in the USA, From east coast to the west coast. Locations vary from each year. The one in Europe is more liberal than the US. One reason is the Autobahn. Higher speed limits. There races are very expensive to enter and are very exclusive to the rich and the famous usually. I believe the runs are done mostly to raise money for charity.
There is another run under the name Cannonball Run

Didn't you see the movie "Hidalgo"? Started with Horses long ago, and the deserts were the most challenging.
