I`d like a guitar around 300 or 400 dollars or less possibly

Go to a reputable used instrument store in your area. They will be happy to help you find a suitable guitar. Remember, used is almost always cheaper.

I bought my Guild 12 string for about $400 around 20 years ago and it has served me well, including surviving an accident in which the neck was snapped. I remember picking it out and thinking how Eric Clapton played a Guild.

If you're starting out then buy something really cheap ($100 or less) to learn on and decide whether you are really serious. Move up as you improve. I never improved much past the not-starting-but-not-serious-either phase so I stick with my Guild.

A Takamine G340SC is a good acoustic 6 string guitar. This one sells for about $250 at Musicians Friend - and right now they have a free shipping special.

There are a few good sites for purchasing guitars online:
musiciansfriend.com
zzounds.com
samash.com
When looking for a guitar, be sure to look at the users rating, not just what the company says about their product.

Some talking points to consider:
Acoustic - no amplifier needed
Acoustic/Electric - with a body to resonate the sound and with a pickup so you can plug it into an amplifier.
Electric - requires an amplifier to be heard properly.

There are many options, but this is my two cents!

I think it is a matter of preference.
If your referring to acoustic guitars, a relatively good one can be purchased at a reasonable rate, but keep in mind you usually get what you pay for when buying new. Yamaha is nice for its price.
Regarding electric I like Ibanez, again nice for its price tag.
If money is no option it would be slightly different.
I really like Gibson but there is a heavy price tag.
Really nice guitar brands to me are Charvelle, Jackson, Fender, Ibanez.
I would prefer a rosewood fretboard as it makes it easier to play in my opinion.
I would suggest you check out a music store and have someone there show you the options you have in your $ range.
