ajax is a feature of javascript. javascript runs under the rules that you can't get out of the browser, and you can't talk to other servers. You should be more concerned about the damage that a simple download or microsoft extensions for IE! That's how most (if not all) web viruses get spread!

AJAX is as secure as you make it. AJAX is really javascript requests that get results from XML, and put it on your page where you specifiy (or you can put in a variable for later use). http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/ is a great place to learn about AJAX, and can show you the basics of it. There you'll be able to understand how it works.
