The obvious things like avoiding alcohol, caffine, nicotine, sugar etc. will help. Also avoiding napping or going to bed before you are tired. However, if the disturbed sleep is due to stress, the best solution is to resolve the things you are anxious about.

I suffer with severe insomnia which is stress-related and I do four things that seem to help.

Drink a warm drink (preferably milk) half an hour before you go to bed. It produces a rise in body temperature and when the body cools down it makes you tired.

Take a warm bath before bed. Same principle as above.

Buy an oil burner and burn essential lavender oil. It has relaxing properties.

Buy 'complete relaxation' by Glenn Harrold and play it when you go to bed. It is a relaxation/hypnosis tape/cd and it is available on itunes if you prefer.

There are several ways to sleep well.
Don't eat a large or heavy meal closer than a couple of hours before you sleep.
Have a glass of warm milk or chammomile tea with honey.
Meditate or at least sit calmly thinking of nice things, happy things, calming things.
If that doesn't work, I find that reading an absorbing book takes my mind off whatever tensions I have, and gives my mind enough of a break from the stress that I fall asleep really easily.
Good Luck!

there are relaxation techniques such as tensing and relaxing muscles or meditating or chanting a mantra however if you think of pleasantries to calm it may be too stimulating so better to void all thought as much as possible then on the physical side warm milk, Valerian root or some teas like chamomile or over the counter benedril but this is only a temporary devise to get one in the right time frame in a few days as it will leave one drowsy .
good luck

Stop all stimulants like coffee, tea, cola, caffeinated beverages and chocolate.
Do not drink alcohol.
Do not take naps during the day.
Have a glass of warm milk about a half hour before bed.
Try not to think about anything while you are falling asleep.

Sleep in a dark, cool, quiet room. Do not have your alarm clock facing you. Avoid caffeine and cigarettes three or four hours before you plan to go to bed.
