Seems to me no smoking in the workplace is appropriate but outside, as long as you are not blowing smoke in folk's faces, why not? People have the right to not be exposed to your smoke but you have a right to smoke if you are not bothering anyone else.

Yes this is right, I am an ex smoker, and I hate running the gauntlet of smokers in the morning, I have no issue with them smoking in a designated area that can be avoided but if i cant avoid it it should be banned. Also the company image suffers considerably when a gang of smokers are puffing away outside. However consider the legal side. If you own the land outside the business gates eg a footpath or something you are within your rights to ban the smokers. However if it is public property you cannot ban it. The only thing you can do in this instance is enforce a no- smoke break policy, people should get the normal breaks with no additional time to go for a puff.

It's annoying when staff smell smoking, but what would people who are already addicted to cigarettes do if there was a total ban on smoking (even for outside)? It's not just bad habit it's also a serious biochemistry problem for them. So... hiring non-smokers only could help in case you maintain this policy for several years probably until the last smoker has left the company.

Definately. There's no reason why I should have to put up with selfish tw@ts smoking around me fo 40 hours a week. As for smoking outside, regardless of whether shelters or other facilities are provided they end up being a stinking mess which I find offensive and disgusting to walk past.

I have no problem with people wanting to smoke, and although I think it's a good idea, I wasn't one for preaching or complaining about smokers in bars etc. However, the workplace is a completely different proposition as individuals HAVE to spend so much time there.

Stopping smoking inside work is fine. Also stopping people smoking during their working hours is fine. I also think it looks really bad to see huddles of people outside a company dropping tabs and generally making the place look untidy so would support no hanging around outside smoking. I don't think companies can stop people smoking in their own time, off the premises at lunchtime - it is only a job after all.

Absolutely agree. It is right.

You pay people to work not indulge their addiction. If they are allowed to go out to smoke, productivity drops and non smokers are less than thrilled about others having ciggie breaks.

There cannot be anyone these days who isn't aware that cigarettes are an addiction not a life style choice.

Would employers accept an alcoholic trotting off to the loo for a quick snort every half hour or so?

Although I'm not a smoker, and I HATE inhaling secondary smoke (never even gone out with a smoker). I think a workplace should have a dedicated smoker's spot to stop the cancer stick addicts grumbling. It should be a dedicated room, well out of the way of a thoroughfare, or outside a seldom-used exit, NOT the main exit, as the non-smokers don't want to have to hold their breath and smoke up their clothes walking into work in the morning.

I;m a former smoker, and I can understand the not smoking inside, and outside around the doors. But they should have an area outside but still close enough where you can smoke. Sorry, that's today's world. It's ok to poison us through other means in the environment which are 100 X's worse. I think they should be more concerned with the stuff they put in/allow in our food, water, pollution, vaccines. Ok, off my soap box...

I am a smoker and as a courtesy to others I will not smoke in any enclosed space.People would be breathing my smoke for hours. That's wrong. If I am outdoors I look around any outdoor places where people gather. If I see that others are not smoking I keep my distance and smoke at least 30ft from them.I DEFINITELY WILL NOT SMOKE AROUND CHILDREN.

Absolutely, why should someone who chooses not to smoke run the gauntlet of the stench of smokers everytime they want to enter or leave work ? The selfish attitude of smokers should also be banned from the workplace - I don't get ten minute breaks 3 oir 4 times a day.

Equally I don't fart at my desk - it's not fair on my colleagues, so I save it for my kids later.
