If you really bought it legally, and Vista says the key is no longer valid, just phone Microsoft and tell them that you switched to bigger hard drive. They should understand. But I've heard they are very picky on the amount of times you can upgrade your system. So that's one reason I won't upgrade yet (also since I format my PC bi-monthly).

Vista is supposed to let you move it from one computer (or drive) to another, but you can only have it one one at a time, according to Microsoft. The thing that is bugging you is the 'helpful' security feature that makes sure you don't make any boneheaded choices. You can turn it off, but I don't remember right now how to.

It's giving you a chance to make sure that you really want to make the change, and are aware that what you're about to do may cause problems for the computer down the role.
