Kurt Cobain. As far as changing the world from a musical standpoint, his band Nirvana pioneered the Seattle grunge sound into the mainstream, ushering in a new era in pop culture. This also signified the end of metal and the era of the hair bands, where booze, Aqua-net and leather was replaced by teen angst, deep lyrics and cause for self reflection.

Kurt Cobain.

As for changing the world, his legacy is some good songs that angsty teenagers in particular found appealing and the fact that his band and their grunge contemporaries paved the way for some of the most horrific dreck in the history of popular music by way of the bands that they influenced. I could easily live in a world where Kurt Cobain never existed because that would be a world where post-grunge mainstream rock did not exist.

nirvana was a great band. it's not their fault morons decided to rip off their style and make bad music. that happens with everything. people always rip people off. blaming them is kind of like blaming the beatles because of every bad band with electric guitars that came after them.
