No it isnt. America refers to the continent as well which include North America and South America; and there are a number of countries in these two parts, United States of America is one of these.
So one may call our country America but at times its misleading to equate it with United States. The Correct name is United States of America.

Although some people use them interchangeably, the real answer is NO . . .
The Americas are all of north and south America.
The north is Canada, the USA and Mexico.
It is the United States of America, but not the only country in the Americas.
