I know this isnt a question but Im a hard working waitress who gets paid minimally per hour, I know thats not the customers fault, but no matter how old or young, cute or ugly, fat or thin, smart or ignorant your server may be, she/he is not there to attend to the every whim of of her/his customers and not getting anything in return. Waiting tables is not a public service its extremely hard and strenuous work.Ok, Ok, I know you sometimes come across a terrible server here and there, but be a decent person and put a buck on the table. If anything write him a nasty note with it and go complain to the manager.Youll probably get a free meal out of it anyway. Please just realize they are their to pay their bills and feed their families, just like we all are.I work my butt off trying to make a pleasant dining experience for my customers and most of them just dont care.Just too cheap, and some leave me bibles(no kidding) Appreciate the thought but bibles dont pay rent Comments? Feedback?

Oh, yeah, our minimum wage for tipped employees only has to be $2.13 per hour, AND THATS WHAT I MAKE, and most servers for that matter. Hello! It's 2007!

Amen, CM!!! I've been a server for 9+ years now, and I've been through it all too. I chose that as a profession, not a part-time after school job. I'd sweat my butt off running around while still having to look professional. And then get a small pile of change from the ladies who lunch. I know how disappointing it is to get 65 cents. At least leave a buck! Oh God, even during dinners with a $50 check, I'd get $2. Nobody can figure out decent tipping! And it's not me, I'm a good server. The people who leave me paltry tips where the ones saying what an enjoyable experience they had. I never left a glass or cup run empty before a refill, I'd fetch more napkins, utensils when they'd drop them, I put up with kids running around because their parents were too lazy to watch them, you name it.

God bless the decent tippers in this world.

I use to work as a waitress and yes, i agree, it is very hard work. Some customers just don't realize. I tip a standard 20%. Tipping is a part of going out to eat. Some people tip gas station attendants(Jersey is full-serve) and don't think about someone who really does SERVE the customer. When I was a waitress the pay was $2.15 an hour. I wonder why that never goes up?
BTW-the wage is a federal wage for servers and people that work for tips. Tips are reported with the wages! That is why people should tip-it is part of a servers' income.
And am i the only one that gets a little ticked that every store i go in has a tip jar?i.e. mcdonald's, convenience stores, list goes on. At least THEY get the state required minimum wage without tips.

"I don't get tipped for doing well at my job and taking care of my customers' needs". Yeah, and you probably get paid a LOT more as well. Salaried I bet. And if you have a bad day...you still get paid. In the service industry if you have an off day, your 'boss' (i.e. the bitter old man you are waiting on) can determine whether or not you get paid that day. Contrary to popular belief...servers are not dumb and wait tables because it's the only thing they can do. Quite the opposite actually. I would guess that upwards of 75% of servers are in school. They wait tables because the schedules are usually flexible and most restaurants will work around their classes. It can be easy money in a minimal amount of time. Please remember this when you eat out. Next time you feel like stiffing your server just think how you would feel if your boss was like, "You know Steve, you seem to be a little off. So guess what. I'm not paying you for today."

As a side note those bibles are infuriating. Like I'm suddenly going to become whatever religion it is your selling just because you left me propaganda. Here's a tip for you...Leave your beliefs where they belong, in your church. And oh yeah, could you clean up that ridiculous mess your brat just made all over my section? Thanks.

I tip very well usually about 20-25%..When you get your bill move the dismal point over one spot and double it that's a easy way to do it! And most people don't understand that if there is something wrong with their food its the COOKS fault not the waitresses fault. I'm a bartender and i know how it is to work for tips. But, I think now that i work for tips i know what is expected and whats not expected being a waiter/waitress so i think now I'm a bit more pickier, I can tell if its the waitress fault or the cooks, but i always tip at least 15% even if they are horrible... 2.13 and hour that's crazy!! What state do you live in?? Move to Washington, You would get paid way more like 4times that an hour!!

I understand what you are saying and i think that $2 something an hour is a disgrace but what angers me is that the restaurants and cafes are charging a good price for their meals and then expecting the patrons to subsidise their staff's wages. I believe what should be happening is that the employers should be paying their staff properly and not expecting their customers to do it for them. Most restaurants work out how much it costs them to make a meal including food and labour and then mark it up by at least 65%. All that profit going to the owners. Having said all that I totally agree with what you are saying about how hard waiting tables is and how some customers are rude and don't appreciate the job you do.

We eat out about 2-3 times a week (we've earned it!), and a good waiter/waitress can make or break a nice dinner out. You should be making more money absolutely, since you sound like a very conscientious, hard-working person.

About 2 weeks ago, we were having dinner out at a very nice restaurant -- halfway through our meal, my husband asked for a glass of their house Merlot (about $6 a glass), but the waitress suggested a better wine. She brought the wine and then after we finished dinner, the check -- the "better" wine was real better, indeed, @ $15 a glass! We can afford it, and most people would blame us for not inquiring about the cost, but given the $9 difference, we feel she took advantage of us. We decided we'll never go back, although we really should have complained to the manager.

Again, my point being, that a good waiter or waitress is hard to find and both your salary and tip should reflect your performance.

Seems to be a very common problem as much as it is mentioned on Answers. I would be ashamed to tell you how much I tipped before I started working in the industry. Mostly, I think people are just like I was, ignorant to adequate tipping. Also, a lot of customers think it is the restaurants responsibility to pay their employees a decent wage, as you and I and most servers know, they do not. I think it is time for the industry to raise servers pay to at least $3.00 above mini um wage. Then they can raise their prices to cover the extra expense. The current system is working very well.

I totally agree with you. I, too am a server and I am amazed at the ignorance some people have. I think alot of it is that too. They just dont know. Personally, I think everyone should be a server at least one time in their life. To really appreciate it. Also, I know in some other cultures, a server is looked up on and gets paid very well and has to go to some college its considered to be a prestige career. Only in America will you find the most ungrateful, greedy, cheap asses who tip maybe 10%!

I always tip the waitress at least 15% of the bill. My husband on the other hand thinks the people that run the place should be paying the waitress a fair wage....that they are taking advantage of the customer by expecting them to subsidies the waitress wage along with charging plenty for the food.
I know a good waitress works her hind end off and I admire their skills. I know on top of all the hard work they have to put up with a lot of rude, crude people.
Thank god for waitresses.

Wow I feel for you! I used to wait tables back when gas was only 0.95 a gallon and I didn't even make minimum wage servers got paid 2.13 an hour but I was fortunate enough that one back then people almost always tiped and tiped good and two I had lots of regulars that would wait to sit in my section in fact most of us in the reasturant did.

I do wosh that people would wake up and realize that what you have just said is sooooo true, cuz I think it's rude for people to not tip. Hell if you go get your hair done most people tip the hairdresser.
