With NASCAR changing it's televison contracts, and the fact that they seem to have forgotten the fans that were there in it's growing, and lean years, and are now more interested in the Hollyweird people, do you think the sport will continue to lose fans, and viewers like it did last year? I have been a fan since 1972 and I know I am.

I think NASCAR has become the #1 spectator sport in America and #2 sport in television ratings because they have worked hard to broaden their base and appeal to the country as a whole. I think the growing and "lean" years you speak of were when the sport was basically a "southern" sport. I know a lot of the original southern fan base was miffed when they did things like drop the Southern 500 in favor of racing, I think in California, but without broadening the fan base, NASCAR would NOT be what it is today. Even now, with races all over the country, alot of people still think of NASCAR as that little southern "redneck" sport (and don't flame me.. you know that's what people still say, even though it's not true). Heck some people still won't even classify it as a sport! But if NASCAR had not grown past it's roots, it would still be a small southern sport. You would not see the kind of competition you see now.. it would still be just a few well funded teams as the only competitors in the field (like the old days with the Pettys, Yarborough, and Allisons)... 2 or 3 competitive teams and the other 40 are field fillers!.. not good for competition. Now with the higher profile and the money brought to the sport by the wider fan and sponsor base, most of the field is pretty competitive, making for better races and a better and more respected sport all around.

You seem miffed that they have “forgotten the fans that were there during the lean years”… if they only focused on and catered to those southern fans, it would still BE the lean years!

As far as the TV contracts.. frankly I'm glad they dumped NBC... I was hating their coverage the last couple of years!

I don't think the television contract has anything to do with it... .I'm sure that Nascar will lose fans this year as they take each other out in drunken high speed drag races whilst they shoot at each others mullets from the back seat of their dodge.

Do you like my mullet by the way?
