The measurement of time is human artefact. Aviation, meteorology and other sciences run on UTC so I would expect polar explorers to do the same. Even so, they can choose any time zone they like . If they want to run on the same time as home so they know the best time to ring Mum, there is no reason they can't.

At the South Polar station they use UT or GMT. Anything else wouldn't make sense.

exactly it is either 00:00 hrs during peak winter and and 12:00 hrs during peak summer. in between it is a transition time between the two times depending on the DAY.
