My grandmother says I shouldnt tickle my daughter but I thought she liked it because she smiles and laughs. Is this just an old wives tale?

I just lightly brush my nose over her belly.

I only do it for a few seconds and then give her a rest. Oh and I made a mistake she didnt say it causes pain she said it makes the baby crazy.

Have you ever had someone tickle you in a spot that was so ticklish that you could barely breath or thought you'd pee - or maybe it hurt a little? Thats what your Gram is talking about. It depends on how you are doin it... I am sure there is joy in seeing a smile on your babies' face - and I wont tell you not to touch, tickle and interact - but be very careful how you do it and how often you do it...... I lil' tickly on a cheek or tummy momentarily maybe. But I would never grab my babies foot and tickle tackle... Know what I mean?

Maybe take Grams advice witih a grain of salt and just make sure you are very aware when you do that. We all know you only want to be the best MOmmy and have the happiest child. The fact that you are concerned enough to ask the public says a lot.

Tickling isnt bad for a child yes it can hurt if they laugh to hard since it is a work out for there little body.. The way I look at it tickling is fine as long as only done for short spurts of time due to the fact depending on the childs age they may not be able to tell you to stop.. like imagine how you feel when someone is tickling you and your laughing sooo hard but at the same time telling them to stop cause your laughing so hard its hurting but they arnt stoping same sorta thing..

I hope that helps

I have never heard tickling causes pain that must be an old wives tale. If you baby is laughing then she is fine and enjoying it.

As a young child, not an infant, I was tickled for a long period of time by a relative and although I laughed, it was a traumatic experience I remember now in my 40's. I laugh at being tickled, but I do not enjoy it.

I must say this HAS to be an old wives tail. Giving this attention to your baby is very important. Soft touch and talking with your baby enables wonderful bonding time. Obviously if she is laughing and cooing she enjoys it. I am sure you are not rough with your baby so keep on lightly tickling and giving her the affection she enjoys. :o)

that can be torture yes .
that is if you over do it . a one second tickle is fine . your Grandmother is not wrong so much as people are saying it is 100% true that tickling a person child can be abusive if you over do it . just be a normal mom and think gee have i tickled my child so much now she is having trouble catching her breath ?
that is all you have to do .
little bit fine 1 or 2 min straight non stop laughing too much

you answered your own question, she smiles and laughs, what does it mean when you smile and laugh, you are mom you will know when your child hurts trust yourself, don't tickle her in front of gramma, it clearly makes her uncomfortable but remember you are mom trust yourself, what does your gut say about tickling everyone will tell you that what you do is wrong but you know your child you will make mistakes but they will be your mistakes, listen to the people who say positive things to you, and if they sometimes have constructive criticism i would listen but not the people who are just judging, you make your child laugh, good for you, your a great mom

It fun to tickle a little bit. It does not cause pain any more than it causes you pain, that's ridiculous, but what you do have to keep in mind is that you have to keep it short and sweet so that it doesn't become overwhelming.

Old skool people, lol, no it doesnt cause pain.

Just dont tickle them too much or they will end up soar from their stomach, laughing is like a ab exercise.
