In any given situation there is always more that one way to deal with things. What's true for the individual is also true for the group. Everybody thinking the same way, reacting the same way is a weakness akin to slow death.
Orthodoxies tend to fail if they don't adapt to the changing world. Catholic Doctrine has allowed for some changes, particuarlly in recent years. Soviet orthodoxy was very rigid and the brute force it used to enforce it's orthodoxy helped contribute to its downfall.
That's the beauty of genetics. Your DNA spirals allow for changing information generation after generation to deal with a changing environment. The ones that don't change with thier environment, don't reproduce.
Forgive me for introducing evolution when talking about religion, but that was part of the strength of the US and the inherent weakness f the 3rd Reich in WW2.

Oh boy after reflection, I love diversity and I would think that a nation of robots would not be to my liking because I would have to be one too. However you are not talking about what I prefer but why is it better for a country. A country as such does not have any preferences, but the people living in it have, it is good to have a system were people feel free to believe what they wish, because what you want is happy and tolerant people living near you.

diversity and tolerance, rather than uniformity, create a dynamic culture, allows new ideas to be introduced, and in total makes that nation a powerhouse of thinking, science and economics.
Some good examples are - the Muslim empire from 750 A.D. to about 1600 A.D., the Hellenistic empires after Alexander, the US today.

Look at the history of Europe - single state religions caused enormous bloodshed - wars, civil wars, religious purges of "heathens", struggles for thrones, etc...
It's the main reason why the Founders chose what they did for the US. They all went to school in England and saw the results first hand.
