Some political observers argue that most of the political power and authority should remain at the federal (national) level. Others argue that the balance of power is currently swinging toward state and local governments, and they welcome this change. Which level of government is more effective? Why? Governments are inherently ineffective.

However, in forging the United States, Thomas Jefferson argued for limited federal power in the interests of keeping most legislation localized to where people could more closely watch their legislators and hold them accountable.

I believe each state has it's own moral issue and so on and have all kinds of different laws. There are more state law officers in each state than the federal agents. But, being from one side of the law to the other in my life time of 51 years old that the state is much more effective. I don't know where you could look for statistics on each one. There are more state prisons than fed., prisons. I know that each state should have there own laws. And I have lived in several states and they all are different, concerning certain issues. Who protects the average citizen more? The city and State police. I hope this helps. I feel that the Federal Government has to much power and that people are tired of their ideas, because they don't work. And I believe that is why the people are fighting back more. There is a camera on every stop light in this country I think, we are policed in many ways. So the more local criminal they catch the less crime and in turn the state crime rate goes down and Federal Government has less to do with that aspect of our lives. Locals take the heat and the Fed's are more for the big time criminals and problems.

<>Theoretically, the closer government is to the people, the closer it can be monitored. This gives credence to opting for greater State government over Federal. But, that only works up to a point because, each State going its own way would create imbalances that might affect its neighbors. Federal regulation is necessary to offset those imbalances. So, in reality, there has to be govenment at both levels.
