Also we want to go shopping, have a look at the good stores, but we want to pick up some bargins too, nothin in particular but.
Are there anywhere cheap that we can eat as well?

All you need is a map of the country and you're all set to wander about yourselves. The public transport system in Singapore is really great and easy to use. When you arrive at Changi Airport in Singapore, you can check out the some of the tours they provide for free. However, if you're planning to DIY, here's some places you may want to visit and some tips to make your holiday more enjoyable.

1. Sentosa
- for the beach, sun and sea
- there are many other attractions there such as the luge, the Underwater World, Fort Siloso...

2. Orchard Road
- for shopping, shopping and more shopping

3. Clarke Quay
- for some night life at the pubs, bars and clubs

4. Chinatown, Little India
- for the rich culture

5. Fort Canning
- for the history

6. Pulau Ubin
- one of Singapore's southern islands
- for some trekking, biking....

When you come to Singapore, prepare loose fitting pants! The food here is excellent and there is a wide variety of food. You can have traditional Chinese, Indian, Malay, Western and Arab food. Also, for some Singaporean dishes, all you need to do is check out the hawker centres or food courts that are all over this tiny island.

* Don't go Newton Circus, it's a tourist trap - you pay exorbitant rates for average dishes.
* Don't take trishaw rides - they're another tourist trap. Locals just use the taxis, buses and trains to get around.
* Most Singaporeans speak English (though you might find it slightly difficult understanding due to the accent and the usage of Singlish - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish)
* If you're going to be using the buses and trains, you'll need to get an ez-link card which you can purchase at any train station. Or you can keep coins handy. It's cheaper to pay via ez-link though.

I have a few websites here which you might want to check out as they will provide much more information on Singapore than I can in yahoo answers. and I'm sorry for the messy structure of this answer, there's just so much to write. :D Hope you enjoy your stay in Singapore!

p.s: those 2 sites above should be enough as they link you to many others should you need more information

Well, I'll go in order.

Tours or do it yourself: I'm not too sure 'bout that. Your choice on this one, is my opinion.

Shopping: Orchard Road is the shopping hub of Singapore. Plenty of malls around there, you should be entertained. And just for the sake of mentioning it, if you want to go see the awesome arcades, you may have to go to local shopping malls. Like Jurong Point Shopping Centre has a neat arcade. Lol sorry about the arcade part, I just like the arcades that are in Singapore. Anyway, onward!

Food: Relatively cheap if you go to like food courts and those kind of places. Restaurants, of course, cost more. Local food is good, don't stick to American food or whatever there. Try some new stuff here. Good.

What to/not to do: Chopsticks, if you are going to use them, no matter how much you want to eat the food, don't stab your food with it. I hope you know that already. Anyway, concerning sightseeing and stuff like that, here's a small guide.

Culture- Chinatown, Little India
Entertainment- Downtown, Sentosa, Singapore Zoo, Night Safari(as indicated by the name, it is a night time zoo), Jurong Bird Park

That's all I can think of right now. Well, Singapore is small, so you could travel around the whole island in like, 45 mins to 1hr, I think.

Anyway, to elaborate, Sentosa is an island resort. It has 3 beaches, Tanjong(quite deserted), Palawan and Siloso Beach. There are also various attractions there, such as the Musical Fountain, Fort Siloso, Underwater World and more.

Anyway, have fun in Singapore.

Singapore offers a wide range of activities you could experience depending on what you want. For shopping, food and night life you should hang around orchard road (the main tourist belt) especially ngee ann city mall. For sight seeing, sentosa, zoo and night safari. For all-in-one, go to Vivo City, the latest shopping mall with a entertainment complex next door called St. James. For cultural activities, sight seeing and shopping, go to Chinatown in the evening where the crowd is until 18 Feb.

may i suggest that you walk around yourselves as Singapore is a relatively easy country to explore. Transport is good, map is detailed, if you lose your way just ask a passerby for directions.

for sightseeing you might want to go to our zoo, sentosa (man island), jurong birdpark

for shopping you can go to orchard road or vivocity (for the good stores)
if you want to pick up some bargins, maybe you can try chinatown or bugis village

for food no worries its relatively cheap here, go to any food courts or hawker centres, but good food are usually places which do not have air conditioned so you might want to try finding as well

the web below has more information, hope this helps cheers

Hi You could buy a Hippo River Pass and explore the Singapore River. You can hop on hop off the boat to shop, eat and sight see many sites along the river. Get your ticket at Clarke Quay.
