Brandon is dead wrong. He's thinking about ophthalmologists.

Optometry school is 4 years. It's a grad school, so you'll need to finish your bachelors first. Think a total of about 8 years.

You'll start off pretty close to $100K, if not there, right when you get out.

Optometry schools don't care what major you are. Just take the optometry school's required courses and do well in them. Worry about getting into any optometry school.

Honestly, you're in a tough spot. It's not easy getting into these professions, let alone as a single mother.

If you can do it, I'd actually recommend pharmacy. Huge shortage nationwide so it'll be easy to find a job where you want, plus, the nature of the profession makes it easier to schedule your work around your child. Plenty of part time pharmacists out there. Salary is about the same as an optometrist.

Optometry school takes 4 years after you've earned your bachelors. You will need to pass an exam and obtain your license in order to practice, I don't know if you will get paid without the license. You will make $100K very quickly after you get your license. You will make significantly more if you open up your own business. Don't worry about pre-optometry. You can major in basket weaving as an undergrad as long as you complete all the required science courses for Optometry school and do well in them. I'm not sure where you are located, but do an internet seach on optometry school. I'm in So. CA so there's a private one in Fullerton that's very good. I believe UC Berkeley is also very good. Good luck in your decision.

You need to go through Medical school, which requires a Bachelor's Degree in some field.

BS Degree = 4 - 5 years
Med School = 4 years
Optomotry Residencey = 3 - 5 years
11 - 14 years total before you become Board Certified in Optometry

If the $$$ is your motivation for going into Optometry, find another field.
