As others have already said : First of all try altering the brightness / contrast settings - if this makes no difference, try coupling your laptop to an external monitor. If the external monitor shows a clear picture, it could be a faulty backlight.
Does the laptop's screen sometimes show a picture when the screen is slowly moved from the fully opened to the almost closed position and back to opened position again? This was a fault on my laptop's screen, it would light in certain positions and remain black in others. This was caused by wear and tear on the strap cable that took the picture signal from the motherboard to the screen. The opening and closing that a laptop normally gets, had caused the bending and flexing of this cable to partially break. By stripping down the laptop and soldering short wires across, I was able to bridge the break and restore the picture to the screen.

hmm, "almost blank", if you can still see stuff on your screen then try and changing the brightness settings. These could be done if there are dedicated buttons for this on the laptop or you can right click on your desktop, select properties, go to "settings" tab, click advanced and see if you can find anywhere after that controls to change your brightness. If you cant do that than it may be a video card problem.
WE need to know some more info about you laptop. So go to Start menu--> Run--> in run type dxdiag and tell us what you see on the screen that comes up, (it should contain a lot of info about your laptop)

If the screen is faint, but no light and you have booted the laptop and see no image. Then it is your high voltage power supply for the cold cathode lights behind the LCD.
This is very probable. You will need to send it in for service. It cannot be fixed by a user. Check the guarantee.

Unless you have been messing with the settings I would go with what bitburger suggests, it could be the backlight. I'm only repeating this for the points, but it don't make my suggestion less valid. Best of luck!

Plug an external monitor into it. If it works, it's your screen.
