In Roman Numerals when a smaller no. comes b4 a larger 1 it is taken away, eg. X is 10 so 1X is 9(10-1) , L is 50 so XL is 40(50-10). So XL = 40, XL1= 41 and XL11= 42 i hope u understand now

40 to 42

here L is 50, x is 10

you subtract a smaller numeral from a larger numeral if it preceedes the larger numeral. So if you have XL its 50-10 or 40. If you have LX, then you have 60, because you add the 10 to the 50.

Hope that helps.
