She's popular in the Orients but how well-known is she in Western countries? She became more popular after she starred in Miami Vice, but besides that how many Westerners know her works?

I'm English and I've never heard of her. I've read the other answers though and I am curious, so I'll have to get "Memoirs of a Geisha" to see what I'm missing.

Lots of people in Europe, America and Australia know Gong Li.
She has been in many english movies, and many of the Chinese movies she has been in are very popular (Like 'Curse of the Golden Flower', which is out now).
The fact that she's one of the most beautiful women in the world also makes her fairly popular.

I saw her first in Memoirs of a Geisha as Hatsumomo, and I thought she stole the show - I found her to be a much more convincing character that the lead (who's name I have forgotten!). Miami Vice wasn't a great film, but I think it introduced her to mainstream audiences.

I've never heard of Gong Li. I saw Memoirs of a Geisha, but didn't know any of the actors names. I'm an American.

Not as many as one would think. I was first introduced to her as an actress in Farewell My Concubine and I've seen her in many films since (of course, the latest Curse of the Golden Flower).
The films she stars in are often shown in smaller theatres, not at a multi-plex for the most part--Curse of the Golden Flower is an exception.

I'm a European.
But I've lived in Hong Kong for the last 23yrs.
So I guess my answer wouldn't count.
But I haven't met a non-American who didn't know at least something about her.

She's immensely popular all over the world. It just depends on which person you ask. She's a dramatic actress, that's her genre, so you might have to ask a person who is all for drama.

I don't think that the average joe or even the average avid movie watcher knows who she is.
I know she is a hot piece of ***. On top of that she is a hot 40 y/o piece of *** with a great face, body and smile.
My uncle Benny, from Hong Kong says rumors of her understanding of the ancient sexual ways are unmatched by any current Chinese woman alive.
