hi,

i've recently begun seeing this guy whose from the african american descent - and i'm not. We're not out and proud and rather hang out as friends up until now, but all we do is hold hands while walking in public. I don't know what it is, whether its the gay thing that bothers them or the interracial thing but they seem to give us the weirdest stares and im very self-conscious. my bf doesnt care so much - but I don't feel like going out in public with him. We argued about this earlier today. I like him and I dont mind it but I hate being judged and it sucks.

Well, I think it's not so much the interracial couple thing in your case as the gay thing. I believe myself and most others feel at least a twinge of discomfort when we see a white WOMAN with a black man, but I don't feel that twinge when I see a white guy with a black girl.

I really only feel that twinge when I see a black guy with any other race. This is just a deep seated race issue that I've learned from family as a kid. I don't discuss that feeling openly, so hopefully when I have children that prejudice won't be passed on to them.

But, really, it's the openly gay thing that is generating the stares and the discomfort.

Now, #1 Ryan, is it being openly gay that bothers you, or is PDA's in general, did you feel uncomfortable holding hands with girls in public before you were with your bf? If you did, then you two need to reshift your focus onto that, and not the gay thing.

Either way, one compromise or exercise that could help, is to go out of town, and practice it, somewhere where no one will see you two that knows you. Go to a mall 3 hours away, take a weekend away a few hours from where you live, and practice there.

My s/n is badbadboy6979, if you two wanna hit me up together sometime, maybe I can play marriage counselor and help you two get to the bottom of those issues, I enjoy helping people with things like this.

They're probably more concerned at seeing you two hold hands than they are about the colour of skin. Either way (be it skin colour or the gayness of holding hands) it is their problem, their ignorance, their prejudice and their egos that prevent tem from seeing two people who are happy together.

Don't go letting other people dictate your life for you - you won't get to enjoy it for yourself if you do.

Because they know you'll be giving up your old friends. That you must have been desperate. Its also a cut down to your own race. So basically ppl feel sorry for you.
