Basically I would like to know if Greyhounds are generally reliable and safe and if many people have had good experiences traveling on them. I would like to take one from MA to Atlanta but cannot afford airfare and thought a bus might be a better alternative. thanks!

As far as traveling on the Greyhound, it's safe and economical. Can get yourself a little stinky on long trips, like from Seattle to Orlando. They don't stop for showers.
The only thing shady and scary are the people who hang around the major depots. The ones preying on out of towners, especially the young and naive. Don't trust anyone except the authorities.
Otherwise, have a great trip. Remember, they offer insurance for an extra dollar for your luggage. Buy it. It's only $1.00, and they can lose your luggage too. They did mine and I only got about two percent of what that bag was worth because I didn't spend that one lousy dollar.

They are generally ok, however I cannot say the same about the actual bus depots. They can be shady because of the many diverse people that go there. Other than that its pretty ok. I would recommend you going with some one to help with the boredom lol.
