A proportion is a relation between two things, in this case pounds of fertilizer to square feet covered, and is usually represented by fractions. Thus, from the information
5/100 = 25/x
where x is the square feet covered by the 25 pounds. These two relations are equal. You can use the rule "product of the means equals the product of the extremes" to get
5x = 2500 -> x=500
Thus, 25 pounds of fertilizer will cover 500 square feet.
