How does the record company know? What if you're downloading stuff that you just can't find or buy anywhere?? Maybe there's alot of music out there that you can only get by file sharing.

Then how do i turn off the sharing mode in limewire, it's sort of confusing. I go to options-->sharing-->(then what?)

People have been sued for thousands of tunes and for fewer than a dozen. It appears to depend on what the RIAA and others are trying to prove.
Here's something important to keep in mind: Computer systems make it possible to retain every little exchange for years, so it's conceivable that the copyright owners could decide years from now (exactly how long would depend on what statute of limitations applys and what the limit is) to sue -- or prosecute -- for the song you downloaded last night.
Not likely, of course, but who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of the greedy.

You can download as much as you want as long as you don't 'share' it. By that I mean, as long as you don't allow others to download a song from your `computer to theirs. Example: Say you get on Limewire and download 'Hound Dog' for UserX. You can not be arrested. However, UserX CAN be arrested because he just allowed the distribution of copywrited material. You did not. So download to your heart's content but 'TURN OFF' the sharing feature and you can't get into trouble. The way they catch people is they will see that you downloaded 'SongX' from UserX. They will then watch the upload traffic from your computer and if they find you are allowing someone to upload SongX from your computer to theirs, then you can be arrested for allowing the distribution of copywrited material. Hope this helps. :-)

Sometimes you can download tons without getting caught, and sometimes it only takes 1 time. They have ways of finding you. The person you are downloading from could be them. You never know, you're just taking a chance.

I don't know, but if they tried to sue me for something like that, I'd find their head-quarters, and shoot as many of them as I could before detonating my suicide vest. Remember that, Lars Ulrich, you nazi fag*ot!
