The rock type commonly associated with carrying diamonds is known as kimberlite. It is an extrusive volcanic type of rock originating from deep in the mantle forming pipes. The highest produces of diamonds is in Africa and Australia but other mines exist elsewhere but are mostly associated with kimberlite or kimberlite weathered deposits.
