Though the server would like 20%, I think 10-12% is more customary at buffets. Most servers are given more tables in a buffet setting than in a regular meal service (because they have less to do and can handle more customers) so they should end up making the same amount of money.

If, however, you run the server ragged asking for drink refills and bread baskets etc you should probably tip at least 15%

It sorta relies upon on the quantity of the buffet. If its what i might evaluate a intense-high quality buffet, $15-30 a guy or woman, then particular, the standard 15-20% may well be honest. If its $7.ninety 9 a guy or woman, and you prepay as you come back in, then i'm sorry, yet i does no longer assume lots of a tip if any. in case you want innovations, flow artwork at a common chain eating place. EDIT: a huge area of a servers activity is to get the order, get it to the kitchen, and make sure it gets out wisely. With a low-cost buffet, the server(in case you may call them that) isn't doing that. At a intense-high quality buffet($15-30+ a guy or woman) the server explains how the buffet is setup, the place you will locate particular products, which includes on the far end is the seafood element, etc. in case you have a question on a dish you have in no way had, you may ask the server whats in this. Plus once you're carried out, that server delivers the verify. you do no longer pay as you walk out, or as you come back in. Thats why a intense-high quality buffet server merits a tip fairly of a Golden Corral fill up getter.

At a buffet they better be paying their "servers" more to compensate the fact that they will not make as much tips as someone who serves people who do not get their own food. I used to work in a private club and the servers made more tips WHEN the rich creeps had to get up and get their own food than any other time----stupid!! A tip is for good service, not obligation. Too many people are idiots about this. Don't buy into the guilt of "undertipping" someone who doesn't do much 4 u neway. Tips are a rip!!!! How about paying your people well in the first place, restaurant Bushes!!!!!

It's really hard to say without know if the server actually gets paid minimum wage what most people don't undestand is servers only get half of minimum wage and they have to make the rest up in tips. Although they are not supposed to discuss their wages with customers if you ask politely they usually tell you. I used to be a server for 10 years got out once I got pregnant chose to be a stay at home mom.

you shouldn't feel bad for not tipping 20% at all on a buffet; the tip should usually reflect the service not the tab. although i never worked in a buffet type restaurant i did wait tables/ bartended for about 10 years and whether i'm in a buffet atmosphere or a full service restaurant i usually go ahead and tip 20% unless the service is just terrible and/ or rude. i just can't see the difference between 1 or 2 dollars on a 10 dollar tap. usually at a full service i tip 30%. i can even deal with slow service as long as the place is incredibly busy and the waiter/ waitress isn't sitting around talking with their friends or co-workers. i don't know, i guess i have the tipping karma ingrained in my head from too many years in the terrible, terrible business that is serving the public. i just think for every good tipper there are, depending on what part of the country you work in, 3 to 5 who are either completely unreasonable and make up excuses not to tip well or just don't know any better.

I leave at least a $1. Now the 15% was for the old school of tipping before buffets. But if the waiter or waitress gives me good service, bringing my drinks and cleaning up fast, then I give $2. Of course, when I have to get up all the time to get my drink then I do not leave anything.

There have been only two a waiter and a waitress I have tipped $5. They were fast and that good. When I went to the buffet, my table when I came back was clean with a full drink and napkins if I needed any.

You did OK.

Pfffft, 15% is customary, 18% is generous...

But since buffets are usually cheaper than regular meals, the percentage of the cost of the meal is lower, so those servers don't take home as much a regular servers. Since it's so minimal, I'd probably overcompensate by leaving a little extra.

Not at all. First, 20% is on the high end to start with.

At a buffet, the server does not earn as much as someone at a regular restaurant.

HELL NO!!!You're the one doing all the work!! You have to walk yourself all the way to the buffet tables, then walk all the way back! Then if you're still hungry, walk ALL THE WAY BACK AGAIN! then back to your table! THEN, you gotta walk all the way to the dessert buffet or ice cream machine, and again, walk all the way back to the table! I know you were a truck driver and had to sit for hours at a time and you probably wanted to walk around as much as you could before you got back into that truck but you go ahead and just keep that tip for yourself since you worked so hard for it and had to do all that walkin' yourself!!

You are kind to leave them any tip. I usually leave a dollar or two on per person on a ten dollar a person buffet and that's if they serve drinks.
