I don't know what my problem is. I cannot speak in front of a group of people without my voice quivering so badly that it sounds like I'm about to start crying. I can't control it. It's embarassing and I need to fix this problem.

Like most people, I do get somewhat nervous getting up to speak in front of an audience, but even if I feel great and totally calm when going up, my voice will still quiver! My shaky voice, in turn, makes me feel self-conscious and less confident, AND THAT'S WHEN I START TO LOSE IT! Before I know it I'm forgetting my points, tripping over my words, and I end up feeling like a complete failure. And it's all because of my SHAKY VOICE! How can I work on this???

P.S. I am not an actor, but I'm putting this question in this particular category hoping that there are some tricks of the trade that you can share. Thank you so much!

If you are in college and have to make presentations, or maybe it's your job, I would recommend knowing your speech inside and out. That way you don't really have to focus on what you are saying so much as HOW you are saying it. Because think about it... If you are talking and presenting. Something, and you kind of don't. Um put all your words in order so you just kind of stop. When you. Wouldn't usually stop the sentence right there...

Say what you want to say, HOW you want to say it. If it sounds interesting, they will be interested.

Ask your doctor for a prescription for propranolol! It is a beta blocker that blocks the adrenaline response when you get nervous so that you don't shake and your heart won't race. You can take it only when needed about an hour before a presentation. It has few side effects, many are on it continuously for heart problems, essential tremor, migraines and anxiety. It really is a life saver for public speaking anxiety. Do a search for propranolol and performance anxiety you will see that it is used by many others. Of course natural mental methods will help to, but this might be the boost you need.

I am not an actor either and haven't done a lot of public speaking. But I'll try to answer your question. It might help.

I think you should speak slowly when you do public speaking. You will have control on your speech when you speak slowly. And also don't worry about what your audience is going to say or feel. Just think they are just a bunch of mere mortals like you and me. Just speak slowly and have control on your voice. Don't let your speech control you.

Public speaking is like playing the piano,
The more you do it the better it gets, sooooo
Deliberately start speaking up more at work, in classes , in church . . . where-ever you can, especially in lots of small groups.
The more you do it, the more it will become 2nd nature.

And do not forget to get some slow breaths in before you start AND
Remember, that unless you are addressing the UN regarding an impending war . . . it will probably not be a world changing speech . . . just some regular life info.

Ah, that's not strange, a whole lot of people have strage fright, in fact i dont remember the statistics but something like 60-70% had it.
So that's not strange, just take some deep breaths and if this is for a class your teacher will understand (i like performing, in fact my ternamint is tomorrow); anyway if this is non-school privately talk to person in charge (if it's work related make sure you get it handled, and not think it will kill your job)
