People say 'just kidding' at the end of an offensive string to try and not be labeled mean, or had second thoughts about what they said and want to retract it without acknowledging they said it. Oh, if you were just joking about it, then it must be okay!
Of course, it isn't. To say something means that it was worth the effort to say, and they meant it. 'Just kidding' is an imaginary Get-out-of-jail-free card.

It is called sarcastic irony and I hate it! Also, I think when people joke with people in mean ways that hurt their feelings that they are doing it because there is something deep down inside that joke that has something to do with something that they hate about themselves. I was watching this show on the University channel and this psychology professor was having a lecture about jokes and how they show underlying problems about the subjects that they joke about. He was talking about these jokes about women and their roles in the house. Then he digged deep down into the jokes and showed just how disturbing that they can be. He showed how people that would make jokes like these and think they are funny, must have issues with the gender roles of women. This is just what he said. Have a good night!

It's called passive aggression. They think they can say nasty things and then try to shrug it off. Don't let them get away with it. Say something like, "That is really insulting and it wasn't a joke." Avoid people who behave that way. They are bad news.

we all fall into this trap from time to time and then make that lame excuse.it is a character flaw and difficult to overcome without a concerted effort on the part of the abuser.

you'll never know. But one thing i know is, don't do it too often.
even if you're well known for doing it with your friends, doing it too much is not very healthy
