Most of the images you see in magazines today come from a variety of softwares, all different in technique, price and use. Most of the images are photographs which are usually edited to look even better. Most of the illustrations are nowadays design with computers. The most popular photo-editing and illustration softwares are Photoshop and Illustrator, which are softwares created by the Adobe corporation. Luckily, both of these come together if you buy the Adobe Creative Suite 2, and a bunch of other cool stuff, you will find extremely helpful for your e-book. Once you learn how to merge the work you do with Photoshop and the illustrations you create with Illustrator, you will come up with extremely powerful images. It costs about $1,200 though. So, if you only need to design this one thing, this one time, you can download the trial version for free, but they give you only 30 days to try it, so you better make sure you can complete your design in a month. But if you have the money, you should definitely get the full suite. There are a lot of tutorials on line to help you use and understand the programs, you can also find books on how-to's. I hope this helps you.

Try software products by Adobe. They have GREAT software like Photoshop and Acrobat. The only downside to these fine products is that they are a little on the pricy side $$
