Indian culture associates fair color with 'devas' and dark color with 'asuras', the symbols of good and bad. Every one, from their childhood, are fed with folklore to sustantiate the above. Hence Indians are more exposed to the culture of discrimination based on skin color.

Well as an Indian I will tell you straight out at least 25%(or more) of Indians are racist about someone but it is in more of a way that they look at a person than doing anything to them.
Normally among Indians a person who is lighter(skin color) are looked as beautiful rather than a dark Indian person. Who know why that is.
But some are really good, you've just met some idiot rich people whose family is from a village or are from a rich family in India so they act snobbish. Not to be racist or anything I would say they are from north India.
The caste system is mostly a Hindu thing so not all Indians - thats about 150-200 million Indians who don't follow it. Its kinda retarded since my family converted to Christianity about 3 generations ago. I have some Indian people say that they give money for people in India to convert - then wouldn't all the poor people in India do that just to get the money? lol
You should meet Indian people like me, most of the people I have met have been very cool with me.

While it's difficult to generalize about a whole group of people, it's a worthwhile question. My observation is that Indians in America and the UK are particularly racist toward blacks. I'd say that no group in America or the UK is more anti-black. It's sad, backwards, and wrong. Yet, many Indian people confirm this, especially when it comes to dating. While, of course, a great number of Indian women find black men attractive and can't help but have liaisons, they and their families treat it as the most shameful possible arrangement. It's so prevalent that the prejudice is commented upon in movies such as "Missisippi Masala," "Bhaji on the Beach," and "Bend it Like Beckham." By contrast, Indians may express some mild disappointment about an Indian/white pairing because it dilutes the culture, the attitude toward whites is not racist (character in "Bend it Like Beckham" says to date a white guy is bad enough but forget it if she ever brought home a black guy). While Indians in America and the UK are, on average, a highly educated group, it's remarkable how small-minded many are on this score. They are really in the dark ages and still like English colonial subjects. There's no excuse today for the racism. It's refreshing, however, to see Indians here and there who are smarter than this--I do know of Indians who have married blacks--but I believe they are the exception.

From my life experience in several English speaking countries where I came across many Indians,
I think that Indians in general are racists.
They have that typical Indian arrogance and look down on other asians or latic americans or any other
people of Non-white descent. I know I'm generalizing, but I'm giving you my word as I have experienced this in many other countries.
This is pretty sad as Indians themselves are asians.
Besides being racists, they have a huge ego that cannot be compared to any other cultures. It's sort of like
"We are gurus and wise, but what the heck are you, animal?"
I believe that this general attitude is influenced by their caste system, where people are classified of their "noblety" from high to low.
At the same time, I think that most of the Indians I have seen and you are talking about are immigrants to foreign countries, where they have been treated badly and with
sarcastic attitude from that society. So the Indians degrade other non-white or minority people to feel good about themselves and actually be part of that society.
Edit---------------------------------
I forgot to mention that Sri Lankans fit in this category too. I had lived in New Zealand for 2 years and I totally understand what you are trying to say.

You probably do not know that they have very long noses to differentiate among colours while ignoring their own at occasions. Their God and goddess like Shiva and Krishna, Kali etc. are of black colour but they still associate black with ASURAS(demons). Many of the black complexioned people have proved to be very wise and intelligent poets, kings, thinkers and scientists as compared to swetas (fair coloured people), but this could not still undermine the mythical beauty viewed by many in the fair colours. It may also be possible that typical Indians may not like excessive white or dark skins as it may not soothe their mixed visions and long noses. Sometimes selfish motives may exhibit unreal appreciation on fictitious masks.
Many of them may not like a person whose skin has turned white after getting burnt and many others may not come forward for matrimonial purposes.
They may be racist people when viewed and confirmed by the way they treat their neighbours who have either relatively dark complexions or belong to castes other than theirs or both. Castiest and racist thinking often translate criminal and sinister acts as acts of valour and pride. Does it really fit here, is yet to be seen. Evolution of thousands of castes, sub castes and races there suggest that cunning and talkative people had the biggest say during that period and even today very few do real productive work while others simply get everything by claiming superiority through making fictitious stories and creating illusion and superstition among general masses.

It's not anything to do with the caste system, for sure. Some Indians can be racists, but the same can be said for any other group of people.

It's only some dumb Indians who think in that mentality. I have Indian friends and they treat everyone the same, I guess everyone is different.
