Well, I'm not American, I'm Canadian and this won't be a very effective poll anyways, but let's pretend you're 13 years old or something and you're teacher will accept this.
With my partner and I there was no proposal. There was a simple conversation that ended in him saying to me, "so, I guess we're engaged now." and the reply of, "I guess so." And that was that.
The re-enactment of a cliche from chick flick or Sunday afternoon made for TV movie has never been a dream of ours.

On my 27th b/day, my 17yr. old g/f gave me an antique gold
pocket watch...Engraved on the watch was my name and her
name, her name with my surname...I proposed about 3 minutes
later...So I guess she proposed to me first, We were married
about 6 months later after her 18th b/day...We were married
for about 15 yrs. and had a wonderful kids...My darling wife was
killed in a car wreck about 3 yrs. ago...The watch is on my mantle.
