A simple sentence has one independent clause, and no dependent clauses., or

A complex sentence has a dependent and an independent clause.

A compound sentence has two independent clauses.

A compound complex had two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

In your examples:

1. is a compound sentence because there are two independent clauses. a hint to seeing this is the semi-colon. A semicolon separates two independent clauses.

2. this is a complex sentence, the dependent clause is at the same time, the independent clause is coordination grows with confidence. Here, if you have a clause separated by just a comma, then you have a dependent clause.

3. This sentence is compound and complex. the independent clauses are separated by a comma and a conjunction (the ,or). the dependent clause is "as a rule"

4. this is a complex sentence. It has two dependent clauses: "in sports" and "as in most other activities"... the independent clause is "persistence and patience often pay off"

i hope this helps
