Get Howard Zinn's "Peoples History of the United States."
Chapters 11 and 12 cover that period.

Both Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky have written a great deal on the theme of imperialism in US history.

The single most brilliant book on the theme is "The Fatal Environment: The Myth of the Frontier in the Age of Industrialization, 1800-1890" by Richard Slotkin.
It is the first in a trilogy Slotkin wrote on the nature of violence in American society.

The above applies if you are talking about the colonization of the western United States through the forced removal of native peoples. If you are talking about colonization by western nations of less developed nations, King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a great work on the colonization of Zaire.

The Philippines have been an American colony from 1899 to 1916, a era of an entire 17 years. Mexico grew to become into seized by using the U.S. in a conflict and for this reason those parts weren't and are not a foreign places usa. Puerto Rico is a territory, no longer a foreign places usa. Hawaii is a state, no longer a foreign places usa. Having a militia base in a usa does no longer advise the 1st usa is ruling the 2d usa.

DO AFRICA. The entire continent was colonized by the West. Just about any country there today has some major history with European involvement.
