A tip should only be included in the bill of there is a party of, lets say, 6 or more.

I have been a server for years and here is why...

As a server you work your butt off. A table of 2 or 3 is easy so you easily earn your tip (if you are good). But when you have a table of 6 or more...#1, it takes up more than one of your tables in your section. #2 Larger parties tend you have you wrking your butt off a bit more than a table of 2 (more trays to carry out, more drinks to re-fill, etc.)

Adding a tip to the bill insures that you wont get stiffed (which really happens).

As for adding it to regualr sized table...No. Becasue...what if you added an 18% tip to the bill and the table was planning on tipping you more. Since it is not custom to add a tip here in the US, the people might get mad that you assumed you get a tip.

As a waitress, I would LOVE to have a mandatory tip included, but thats ust not the way it goes!!

Personally, I don't believe it should be included in the bill. A tip is extra money given as thanks for quality service. If a tip was automatically added to a bill, then it wouldnt matter if a waiter brought out cold food, if it took 20 minutes for a bartended to pour a beer, or whether or not a bus boy completely cleared a table.

I almost always tip, and I believe in tipping well because I personally recieve tips for delivering food and know what it means. The only time I won't tip is when the person waiting on me is rude, grossly careless about serving me, or some other major reason where they are directly at fault.

A tip is something earned, not a part of a salary.

If servers were properly paid, then no a tip should not be included. As it stands now, servers make less than half of minimum wage and rarely even see a paycheck because all of that money goes to taxes. If patrons actually tipped based on quality of service, good service would not be hard to come by. The problem is, even when the best of service is given, people still don't tip well. Unless America wakes up and realizes that the only money that a server receives comes from their customers, we should just include it in the bill. Please don't punish the server just because you don't agree that you should are the one that pays their wages.

Not only have I been a server for the past 4 years, I grew up in the service industry. And that does NOT make me scum or worthless. It just makes it hards to graduate when you work full-time and go to school.

A tip IS OPTIONAL for a job well done. Never would I patronize a place that does this. I am a good tipper, being a waitress for many years, but tipping still is the desicion of the customer. If the workers need more money then the establishment needs to up their prices and risk losing even more people!

Being a server myself, I think it is a necessity to include the tip in the bill. In Miami, Florida it illegal to not include it because of a civil rights case which took place. I wish that it didn't have to be included, but people are uninformed about how much the correct amount to tip is.

People just don't tip, so I think it should be included. I would like to leave it up to the customer to decide, but so many people don't tip for no reason that we almost have gotten to the point to where we need to add the tip on.

No. The possibility of a no tip/good tip/outstanding tip provides some extra motivation to your waiter/waitress.

I personally think it is in poor taste for a server to add a tip to the bill. I prefer to make the decision as to how much to tip according to quality service received. It should never be an expected amount, it then would not be a tip, but more of a service charge.

a tip is something you give someone when you receive service above what was expected.
adding it would be like say you always got amazing service. when we all know there's some bad waiters out there. if they want more money get the business to raise prices and pay them a better hourly wage and abolish tips all together because its annoying to be expected to give a tip.

Before Reagan and the taxing of gratuities I would have said no. Now since the server has to allocate a percentage of their income that is supposed to be a gift(To Insure Proper service) and so many people neglect to tip or don't know how to tip properly. I would say that the server should be assured dome kind of compensation for their work.
